The Friends of Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site is a
volunteer organization that began in 1983. The main focus and objective
of our organization is to promote the National
Historic Site and to promote the history of our area.Come and
visit the buffalo
herd on site or the remains of the fur trade
posts or
the fur
press .The
museum on site has exciting
displays and a great archive. Visitors come from all over the
world.
This includes the history of the early fur trading
days , the impact of the Aboriginal groups, and of course
David Thompson.Come and experience the relationship to our
great
rivers and the contributions made by the men and women of the Hudson Bay
Company and the Northwest Company. We accomplish these goals
through educational programs, printed materials, certain gift items and
by lending our financial and people resources to assist the NHS to
fulfill its' Federal mandate. We have been proud of our ability
to establish partnerships within the community
that help us achieve our goals.
The Friends Get The Job Done!
Several years ago we collected 5,000 signatures in the form of a
petition, for the construction of a historic fort that was forwarded to
the government. The project was not successful at that time
but paved the way for thePlayfort that
was constructed in 1999.
We purchased an archeological tray for student use and we have
supplied period
costumes that are used on many different occasions. We purchased the
York boat
that is currently displayed on site.
We constantly appraise and update
things that are needed to promote and assist the Historic Site.
*We offer a bike rental program to assist tourists along the
post sites.
*Design and plant the Heritage
Gardens
*Design and produce items for marketing the site
such as an award winning Trade Bead Kit,
an historic brochure, and souvenir mugs.
*We employ summer
students on a yearly basis
*We administer the popular gift shop located on site.
*The Friends have purchased sound systems for use at the
National Historic Site
Recently The Friends accessed a grant from Canada Parks
Partnership- kids @ parks program that enabled us
to produce the very exciting DAVID THOMPSON
PUPPET THEATRE shown regularly from May -September.
We assist with a number of special events at the Historic Site
including Canada
Day and David Thompson Days.
The Friends have promoted dramatic presentations to great success
such as Jeff
Shea.
We are a volunteer group who rely on children,
parents, and senior citizens to help us at the Historic Site. It
is not only worthwhile but educational.
If you are interested in helping in any way or have some questions
please contact us even if you are a visitor. We could use you for a day
or a month. You might even want to stay!
